Writing puns

When writing down a homophonic pun, which word should be used? Take, for example, the following:

What did the fish say when it swam into a wall? “Damn!”

Now, using the more common, more obvious word, “damn”, means the joke reads like it is spoken (in that the pun isn’t obvious). However, it does lend itself to a single reading more than the spoken version does, so perhaps it would be better — if there were a danger of the joke being missed — to use the less obvious form, “dam”.
