A few weeks ago I received a form letter response from Prue Kelly, Principal of Wellington High School, regarding protests over Destiny Church’s use of the school grounds, that I wrote about at the time. Despite it being a form letter, I shan’t reproduce it here (I would simply be inclined to mock the grammatical errors therein), but it was accompanied by a press release which is below:
PRESS STATEMENT — 1.00pm 31 August 2004
Yesterday afternoon, Stevie Wildewood, Kate Brandon-Green and Sonny Thomas presented Principal Prue Kelly with a petition the students of Wellington High signed asking for the lease of school facilities to the Destiny Church to stop.
After discussing the issues they agreed:
- To discuss and establish a timeline with the Church for their future relocation.
- To clarify with the church that the school buildings will be used for their religious teachings not political activities.
- To discuss with Destiny Church their current use of the facilities and ensure that contact between arts students and the church is minimised.
Wellington High School has a diverse student population with a well-established culture of tolerance and acceptance. The students and Principal have reached this shared understanding for a way forward.
Their agreement was ratified by petition signers at a meeting this morning and they now expect people beyond the school to respect their decision and let them concentrate on preparation for end of year examinations.

To continue my snarkiness, I could find no mention of the original incident or anything relating to it, including the press release, on their website, though the site has been updated this month.
However, it is excellent to see that the matter has been, if not resolved, then at least taken in a good direction.
