God is good

Idiot/Savant at No Right Turn states:

The Divine Command Theory also reduces claims that God is good to a vacuous tautology - God is good only in the sense that he does whatever he wants to. Four-year-olds do whatever they want to too; does that make them good?

In the original context of a discussion of morality, I am inclined to agree. However, I do not think that “God is good/great” is about morality at all (in fact I think morality is over-emphasised in many discussions of religion). God is beyond duality, beyond judgment, and consequently beyond morality. The sense of the word “good” is then not one of judgment, not one which admits of an opposite. Some will no doubt immediately claim that this is meaningless, and I would again be inclined to agree. However, it is not without experiential importance. To say, to understand, that God is good in the face of some disaster is to approach reality head-on. It is to confront what is in the most mature and sensible way possible, with that acceptance which manifests as a gentle delight in the world.
